How does an asteroid explode on impact?

I see these shows on the Discovery or History Channel and when a scenario is created that depicts an asteroid hitting the Earth (usually in an armageddon scenario), an enormous explosion is shown when it finally hits our planet. How does a rock hitting a bigger rock cause this effect? I would just imagine a huge impact with a following shock wave, but an explosion? I don't understand how such an action would occur.
