Can I use a smart phone without purchasing the data plan?

Verizon is my carrier. I want an electronic calender, and the basic organizational features. I would just buy a pda, but they have been over run with smart phones. I think it is ridiculous to pay for the data plan when I don't need those features. Verizon is ruthless. Help.
