Why was society so reckless in the past?

The Europeans couldn't even come into contact with the Natives and the Aztecs etc without trying and usually succeeding in wiping them out...we were so "trigger-happy" wouldn't you say? Easily enraged, easily driven to drastic action, easily driven to cause chaos....no wonder people were all dying by the truckloads from diseases and violence throughout the ages.
