Why do evangelicals say salvation by faith?

because also jesus said because you saw me naked and you didn't dress me you ect.. jesus also encourages to do good actions.. but I don't understand how can a christian who is evangelical will be saved only by faith? then a bad person a killer could be saved only for his faith in jesus
