Does Karajan typically conduct Beethoven's 9th Symphony with vocals?

I've found a few CD issues of Karajan/Beethoven recordings on Amazon and on their listings for said CDs, the credits include "performers", who, when searched on Amazon, typically turn up on Opera "best of" CDs. I'm listening to the 9th Symphony on Napster and am actually enjoying it, which I guess makes sense given how much clical turns up in movies (plus I have a rather dramatic personality anywayz), and I don't know why/how opera vocals would enhance it.
